He seems to respect Alpha Flight a little more than many of the US super groups because they are a national-based defense. That’s the kind of thing he understands. Other groups just thrown together for vague reasons? He doesn’t trust that!

Dave Richards and I break down the first issue of Hulk: Mayan Rule and talk about what’s coming up! But not the mystery of where the book went in September, you still have to wait for that one.

Interesting review. Since you said they are not alien or supernatural that limits things. I also noticed that there seems to be a time travel element. That leads me speculate that these Gods are actually from a species that evolved from humanity or humans themselves who time travelled to the past. Given what the Eternals said plus other evidence I would speculate that they evolved from super heroes.

You had me fooled at first. I thought you were going to do a redefining of the origin of the Hulks like Alan Moore in Swamp Thing. Greg Pak sort of hinted at that in some of his Hulk issues.

Thanks! I try not to tinker with origins that already work. Swamp Thing needed that, because he and Man-Thing had the same origin, which was actually The Heap’s. To me, the Hulk origin has all you need in it and is appropriately modern myth.

The Eternals ideas comes up again soon!

The Heap itself is said to be based on IT by Theodore Sturgeon. One of the great science fiction writers. It is a brilliant short story. Sturgeon said he even got a Inkpot award for creating this character despite never have written in comics. Wikipedia confirms this. I recommend this story to anyone read this blog.

Amok Time, the famous episode from Star Trek is Sturgeon’s other great pop culture influence.
