  • Borders Signing in Tigard, Dec. 1st

    …Which is this Wednesday evening. If you’re in the greater Portland Metro area, come out and see us. Perhaps Lady Gaga or Stevie Nicks will stop by! I may even give away some comic books.

    Special Tigard Store Appearance and Q&A Benefits Lifebeat – Music Fights HIV

    Tigard, OR – Comic creators; Brian Michael Bendis, Colleen Coover, Steve Lieber, Jeff Parker & Paul Tobin will be signing copies of their various Graphic Novels and Trade Paperback Comics on Wednesday, December 1, at 7 PM at Borders in Tigard, Oregon (7227 Bridgeport Road). The signing is part of December One at Borders, a series of special events at stores nationwide to commemorate World AIDS Day. Costumers are invited to participate in a Question & Answer Session at 7 pm.

    Borders will donate 25% of the proceeds from the sale of these creator’s works to Lifebeat – Music Fights HIV. Lifebeat is a nonprofit that uses the power of music and the music industry to help educate young people about HIV/AIDS prevention. For more than seventeen years, Lifebeat has helped to mobilize the talents and resources of the music industry to raise awareness and funds, and to provide support to the HIV-positive community.     No recent comic creator has had such a large impact in the Marvel Universe as five-time Eisner Award winning comic writer and artist Brian Michael Bendis. His critically acclaimed work on the Avengers and Ultimate franchises as well as his crossover work on House of M, Secret War and Secret Invasion have made Bendis one of Marvel’s most popular and busiest creators.

    Comic artist, writer, and illustrator Colleen Coover is a a contributor to a variety of Marvel comics. Ms. Coover has worked on X-men: First Class, Thor & the Warriors Four, Tails of the Pet Avengers, and others. Outside of Marvel, Ms. Coover’s innovative style has been featured in her limited series Small Favors and the all-ages Banana Sunday, written by her husband Paul Tobin. Tobin and Coover’s upcoming graphic novel Gingerbread Girl will be published in Spring of 2011 by Top Shelf Publications.

    Steve Lieber studied comic art at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art. Throughout his career Lieber has worked for every major comic publisher on their most popular and recognizable titles & characters. Lieber is also a founding member of Portland’s Periscope Studio, the largest studio of freelance comics and storyboard artists in North America. His Eisner Award winning graphic novel series Whiteout has recently been made into a movie, starring Kate Beckinsale. In 2010 Lieber released Underground with co-signer Jeff Parker, published by Image Comics.

    Double-threat Jeff Parker has made his mark in the comics industry as both a writer and artist. Parker has done illustrations for DC, Dark Horse and Image Comics, then worked as a storyboard artist on the television cartoon Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot. He returned to comics with his adventure graphic novel The Interman and soon began writing for Marvel, notably on the all ages X-Men: First Class and Marvel Adventures The Avengers. After critical attention on the retro-pulp Agents of Atlas, Parker now helms the Hulk and Thunderbolts franchises. Jeff has also recently launched the new original books Mysterius: The Unfathomable from Wildstorm, and the eco-thriller Underground co-created by Steve Lieber.

    Writer Paul Tobin recently launched the all new Spider-Girl series for Marvel Comics, where he works on a large variety of titles, including Marvel Adventures Spider-Man and Marvel Adventures: Super Heroes, which allows him to write many of Marvel’s biggest characters including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and many others. Tobin is also writing an upcoming Arcade mini-series for Marvel, and was the author of the all ages mini-series Banana Sunday, which he created with his wife, artist Colleen Coover. Tobin and Coover have also collaborated on an upcoming graphic novel, Gingerbread Girl, to be published in May 2011 by Top Shelf Publications.

    Borders has been a longtime supporter of Lifebeat – Music Fights HIV. In addition to developing the innovative national fundraising program December One at Borders, the chain sponsors Lifebeat’s annual Bid 2 Beat AIDS online auction. The fifth annual Bid 2 Beat AIDS auction kicks off on eBay on December 1 as well, with hundreds of celebrity items and experiences from Lady Gaga, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, and more.
