  • Alex Toth DoodleBook STILL IN PRINT

doodlebook  So lately I’ve been alerted to the fact that people are eBaying DEAR JOHN: THE ALEX TOTH DOODLEBOOK by Octopus Press (which is me) for crazy sums, when in fact the book is not out of print. I recently tried to Offer Again that and THE INTERMAN through Diamond, but based on the last time I did that, it doesn’t meet the new benchmark for orders. This isn’t surprising or necessarily unfair, it’s a reality of the fact that Octopus Press (me) only publishes something once every five years or so and is not a place in the catalog people think to check on for books.

I’ve just let lots of shop owners in the Comic Book Industry Alliance know that I have the books, and am now filling a big barrel of orders. Then I’m going to have the rest of my boxes in the Lebonfon warehouse sent to me. Out of necessity I haven’t been taking individual orders because it just doesn’t go well with making my writing deadlines. But, these books need to get into hands, and like a lot of small publishers I’ll need to start doing it myself again. Luckily Periscope Studio has more interns coming on board soon, so someone else can spend all that quality time at the post office. I’ll let you all know here when I’m ready to start taking orders, and probably set up something in the sidebar like a shopping cart.

In the meantime- don’t pay 150 bucks on ebay for the Toth Book! It’s only 20 dollars. As is Interman.

*I’ll clarify more since The Comics Reporter is sending folks here- this book did very well on initial orders, when I was able to do interviews and promotion. It’s when you do an Offered Again, and naturally can’t roll out a bunch of promotion because it’s old news, that a book like this doesn’t make the Diamond Distribution benchmark anymore. As I say, it would probably be fine if it were under a sizable publisher who always is putting out books, not coming from Guy Who Prints Something Every Four Years. I don’t necessarily fault Diamond, but the obvious upshot is that I’m going around them and self-distributing.

Maybe a larger publisher will want to take the rest of my stock and slap their own sticker on it before I have to take up valuable basement space...

Still one of my favorite purchases ever. I would have paid $150 for it, but was glad to only pay $20.

Have I bought AoA or Mysterius yet? No. Do I spend every waking hour constantly checking the clock and wondering why reading media theory makes the minute hands tick by so fast? Yes. O doctoral studies….

I promise, I’ll visit the comic shop soon!

It was worth the $0 you charged me!

(as was the $20 I paid for Interman)

Which reminds me. When are you going to quit goofing around with those small potatoes at…Marvel is it?…and put out INTERMAN 2: THIS TIME IT’S PERSONAL?

I thought it was the OTHER Alex Toth Book (the one with all the animation designs) that was the super rare, super expensive book.

(hard to keep them straight, since I have all of them already.)

Eric, hie thee to a comics shoppe.

    Michael, for YOU it’s 40!

Matt, This time it’s EXTREMELY PERSONAL…

Mark, yes, By Design is usually really expensive, like 300 bucks (still have mine). And I’m used to hearing about that, but then I started hearing about the Doodle Book being ebayed for more. Maybe someone had it confused, but when I checked around, I saw people assuming it was out of print. But no more!

I wish that I could afford a copy of Toth By Design. Somebody with a tentacled vanity press should get the rights and put that one back into print.

Looking forward to finally being able to get my hands on the doodle book. I forget the reasons why I missed out on it the first time, but I’m guessing they were financial. It might have been my LCS, too. I’m sure nobody cares to hear about this. ;)

And as for Interman 2, aren’t all sequels supposed to be called “The Reckoning”? It’s got a nice ring to it.

does the book have an ISBN? why not list it with amazon.com?

I’m finally going to, as I did with Interman. I delayed as long as possible because it’s still a lot of individual mailing, interrupting my schedule. Amazon doesn’t let you just send them a box to pull out of.

really, i have friends who have listed books with amazon – if you create an actual listing they order something small like 5 copies that you ship to one of their distribution warehouses and then if the book sells, they eventually start ordering larger quantities like 25 or 50.

Sean, as I said, I have a book listed with Amazon. Interman orders nickel and dime me by cutting into my writing time. I don’t have the time to keep promoting the book to help orders. Here’s my options: Create comics, Publish comics, Have a Life. I can do any two of those, I can’t do all three. A more organized person can, just not me.

The Toth Book will probably be more worthwhile through them though, as someone will always be looking for more material by him. I will have that set up soon.

Are you going to have copies available to sell at the Emerald City Comic Con in April?

    Yes, thanks for asking.

I actually had placed a pre-order through mailordercomics.com when this was first announced. That was cancelled when the Diamond solicitation was cancelled. As soon as you start taking individual orders, I’ll be happy to buy one from you. (Or, if there’s a comics retailer in the US who has this in stock, send me a email with an amount for shipping! I’d be happy to buy this off a retailer if shipping’s reasonable. I’m in NJ.)

I’m a dealer and I’d be happy to buy a quantity of teh Doodle book. Let me know minimim order and discount.

You might connect up with an Ebay dealer who you can regularly provide quantities to in order to undercut the price gouging. — James Van Hise
