While trying to make my basement a bright, cheerful place, I’ve been painting everything in sight and throwing away everything else. But one of the most satisfying tasks was making two boxes of cd’s turn into one thick binder. It was hard at first, throwing away those jewel boxes- years of trying to protect them or replace cracked ones conditioned me to the idea that they were something special. But as it turns out, they’re not, they’re just bulky plastic taking up too much room, and now my cds are just backups in case something happens to my mp3 library. I did a lame job organizing because I wasn’t about to put artists in order, they were lucky just to get grouped with themselves. In a few cases I did put complimentary bands near each other, like Stone Roses were filed near Inspiral Carpets and then because the Carpets could be a little shoegazery Lush fit in after them. Mystery cds that people burned for me and didn’t label well all go together, for that far off day when I feel like inserting them to see what’s there. Those plastic sleeves are tight for stuffing liner notes in, that’s my only complaint. But to reiterate, boy that felt good.

Good for you, Parker! I was often tempted to shell my CDs and throw away the jewel cases, but never went through with it until the flood made up my mind for me; I’m still appalled when I think about the large moving boxes they used to fill as compared to the two shoe boxes they fill now.

Sounds like a good experience, Jeff. I have a large rack of CDs, also. I really need to condense them like you did. I doubt I’ve listened to a quarter of them over the last 5 years. Viva mp3!

Man, I’ve been tempted to do just THAT for a while now. Maybe… since you’ve led the way… I can… do it. Maybe.

Craig, let me make it easier for you.

    1. Get a big cd binder that holds 200-300 compact discs.

    2. Tell your son to do it.

    3. Recline!

I did that when i moved. It saved so much room.

I am tempted to do the same thing with all my DVDs

Thing is, I’d probably look at half my CDs and say “am I really gonna listen to this again?” and end up chucking half my collection…

I hope you recycled all those jewel boxes!
