  • Toth Boards!

Hey, look over at AnimationArchive.org, they have a nice long piece on Alex Toth with designs. Like this one.

Jeff. Tough question to ponder. Are there any Alex Toth like storytellers in the present day industry? Or was he one of a kind?

Well if you ask half the people in the comics industry, they’ll happily say they’re influenced. Off the top of my head I’d say Darwin Cooke often approaches that level of breaking down a story. But I can’t think of anyone that when you break out a short story by them every artist in the studio will stop what they’re doing and run over and look.
Except maybe for Kevin Nowlan- because that happens everytime I say “Ooh! New Nowlan page!” But the sheer inventiveness of Toth really does put him up there in his own league, starring him and officiated by him.

Makes me treasure my copy of “Toth By Design” that much more! There’s a nice HC collection of Darwyn Cooke DC stuff coming out in June, which collects his Batman: Ego one shot, Catwoman: Selina’s Big Score GN, and his Gotham Knights and Solo stuff. I’d be all over it if I didn’t already have it all (although it would be nice to have it all in one place).
